But why are blue gems this color?
The blue color of aquamarine gemstones is due to the presence of traces of iron (Fe) in the crystal lattice of the mineral. Aquamarine is a variety of beryl, and iron can be present in two main oxidation states: Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺.
When iron is present as Fe²⁺, it contributes to the typical blue-blue hue of aquamarine, while Fe³⁺ can add greener hues. The most popular aquamarine gems on the market are usually those with a pure blue color, and to obtain this hue it is common to subject the gem to heat treatments that reduce the green hues, enhancing the intense blue hue.
In short, it is iron that gives aquamarine its typical hue, and the amount and type of iron present influences the specific shade of blue.
